Matt Hogan’s Background
Matt Hogan grew up on a Thoroughbred farm in Versailles, Kentucky, and realized from a young age that he would always work with horses.
During his early years, Matt gained tremendous experience raising Thoroughbreds, from foaling mares to preparing yearlings for the sales, and everything in between. During high school and college, Matt gained invaluable experience working with Dr. Doug Byars in the Internal Medicine Unit at Hagyard’s Equine Medical Institute during the evening shift.
After attending college at the University of Kentucky, Matt worked for Clifford Barry at Pin Oak Stud to gain experience handling stallions. From there, he worked for Graham Motion in Fair Hill, Maryland to get more experience with horses in training. Next, Matt traveled abroad to Ireland and completed the Irish National Stud Program. While there, Matt worked for Bill Dwan at Castlebridge Stud, prepping sale horses for all the major European sales. He then worked for Con Marnane of Bansha House Stables, breaking yearlings and training horses for the 2-year-old sales.
Returning home to Central Kentucky in 2009, Matt recognized the need for breaking and training of young Thoroughbreds in the area. This led him to privately break and pre-train horses for many local breeders and boarding farms.
Matt’s broad experience in both the United States and Europe give him a unique perspective on starting young horses. Matt quickly built a reputation as one of the leading professionals in Central Kentucky for starting young horses, managing difficult horses in training, and rehabilitating injuries.
In 2012, he co-founded and built a private training and rehabilitation center located in Versailles, Kentucky that grew to over 400 racehorses passing through the gates annually. Matt was responsible for developing multiple graded stakes winners and performers each year including Paradise Woods, Midnight Storm, Salty, Harvey’s Lil Goil, Modernist, Campaign, CZ Rocket, Astronaut, Golden Award, Catapult, Unified, Mitchell Road, Tiger Moth, Ollie’s Candy, Hawkish, Ivy Bell, House Rules and more.
In 2020, Matt was hired as a racing manager for a large, privately owned stable with a global reach. Strategic plans included assisting in the development and reconfiguration of this newly purchased farm, along with implementation of a breaking, pre-training and rehabilitation program to support the offspring of a 100+ broodmare band.
With the increased demand for support facilities of Thoroughbreds racing in the state of Kentucky, Matt and his family opened a new boarding/training and rehabilitation center: Matt Hogan Stables.
Matt and his wife, Jessica live on the farm with their three children Eddie, Adrianna, and John. The entire family share a love and passion for sports and horse racing.
